Pablo Mayor

One cannot talk about Colombian music these days without referencing Pablo Mayor. One of the contemporary voices of Colombia outside its borders, Pablo has dedicated the last seventeen years to writing, producing, and promoting Colombian music in New York City. From Cali, Colombia, Pablo Mayor (B.A., M.A. Jazz Arranging/University of North Texas), formerly Professor of Jazz—Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, has produced three CD’s with his band the Folklore Urbano Orchestra and taken the band to both national and international venues. Mayor’s music has been featured by Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra (annual commissions over the past four years, his Colombian porro Mercado en Domingo recorded on ALJO’s Grammy award-winning album released 2014 Offense of the Drum), and his arrangements recorded by Totó la Momposina. He is founder and producer of NYC’s annual 14-year running Colombian music festival Encuentro NYC. He now works out of the South Bronx, at ID Studio, where he leads the musical segment of ArtsLatinoNY, a multi-disciplinary alliance of ID Studio Theater and Pajarillo Pinta’o dance company. He leads the ArtsLatinoNY ensemble, teaches privately, and has a recording studio to record live music in the space.

“Pablo Mayor is the prototype musician of the future. He is a craftsman informed in the traditions and techniques of the very best that American jazz education offers but is committed to filtering this skill through the amazing colors of his indigenous culture. In this sense, he follows in the traditions of all great composers, expanding the palette of an art form by opening it up to the larger planet and its vast array of possibilities. He does this with the skill of a master, with the humor of a poet, and the vision of an explorer. I am thrilled to perform his compositions and honored by his friendship."-Pianist, composer, and educator Arturo O’Farrill, founder/Afro Latin Jazz Alliance and director/ Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra in Westchester Magazine Oct. /2014

Neal Spitzer

Neal Andrew Spitzer is a full time musician, composer, educator, and sound engineer. He has lived and performed in the NYC area since moving there from Boston in 1992 to attend The New School for Jazz Performance. He is the son of an accomplished Concert Pianist, Rosalie Spitzer, who was also President of The Society For New Music in Central New York. Neal's mother played premiere works by John Cage, Shulamit Ran, and Ahmad Jamal to name a few. Due to this, these and many other composers/performers were routinely in Neal's house as he grew up. As a college student, Neal was commisioned by The Society for New Music to write a piece, Mustela Ermine, which was performed as part of their concert series. He also worked throughout college as a clinician for The Society for New Music and The Central New York Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Larry Luttinger.

While at Brandeis University, Neal forged a lasting relationship with the great Tenor Saxophone Player and Composer Ricky Ford. Ricky was an adjunct professor at Brandeis studying 12-Tone Theory. He quickly took Neal under his tutelage on clarinet and Tenor Saxophone. During his four years at Brandeis and the following two years that Neal lived in Boston, Ricky Ford had him in the first tenor chair as a student and then as a hired musician.

Through this experience with Ricky Ford, Neal was able to play with many of the greats including Milt Hinton, Stafford James, Houston Person, Amina Claudine Myers, Steve Lacy, Jaki Byard, Avery Sharpe, Ran Blake, and many others. Neal also played with Ricky Ford's Fusion Band on saxophone while in Boston. After a few stints with some local bands, Neal went on tour in the early 90s with the Band Shockra. These East Coast Tours included warming up for Phish at Club Casino in 1991 during their Horn Tour. Under the suggestion and direction of Ricky Ford, Neal left Shockra and the Boston are to attend The New School for Jazz Performance in NYC.

Neal's time at The New School turned him into a full time musician. Arnie Lawrence graciously accepted him as his student and his life changed dramatically. Neal has always considered Arnie as a second father as he not only nurtured him as a musician, but helped him break into the world of Jazz. Arnie and Neal would go on to play numerous gigs with such greats as Jimmy Cobb, Frank Luther, and Bobby Johnson. Other teachers include Andrew Cyrille, Bernard Purdie, Charles Tolliver, Chico Hamilton, George Coleman, Charles Tolliver, and Charlie Persip (I love drummers).

Neal also studied arranging with Kirk Nurock and Maria Schneider while attending the New School. He continues to arrange and write to this day for all aspects of his musical career. This includes full scores for Big Band, Orchestra, and Small Jazz Ensembles.

Neal's credits as a musician continue to grow. From running Jam sessions in Woodstock, NY with Stefan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band) on Acoustic Bass to playing regularly with Corey Glover (Living Colour), he strives to play the best and with the best. He has numerous recordings that have been commercially released with his tracks. Many of which were recorded at his home studio. Most recently are releases with Joe Ferry's Big Ska Band featuring Corey Glover on vocals. This band is officially on The Shanachie recording label and distributed by Jump Up Records. Other recent work includes a New CD entitled Old Tunes Restored featuring Neal on clarinet, soprano sax, and tenor sax. Neal's newest efforts are concentrated on his funk band, Gridline which just finishing the mastering for it's full length CD release recorded last fall at Sabela studio on Long Island. Neal can also be seen as a sub with Bim Skala Bim on keys and saxophone.

Ahmed Kharem

Ahmed Kharem is a creative and dynamic drummer in all styles of music. He is a multi instrumentalist, singer/song writer, recording artist, and producer. Born on the lower east side of manhattan, Ahmed started his musical journey absorbing the sounds of jazz music from infancy, as his parents spun classic jazz vinyl everyday in the household. During Ahmed’s most formative years, his ears were being inundated with the sounds of John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, and all of the jazz greats.

As a notable photographer who documented much of the NYC jazz culture during the fifties and sixties, Ahmeds father, Omar Kharem, personally knew many of the most influential and iconic NYC jazz musicians of that time. Omars love for jazz music led him to make it his mission to expose his children to the music. For Ahmed, this exposure mostly took place by Omar taking Ahmed to many loft jazz sessions, Jazz club performances, and jam sessions. During these experiences Ahmed had direct contact with people like Rashid Ali, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Murray, and many others. These experiences gave Ahmed an intuitive understanding of the sound, culture, and spirit of jazz.
Ahmed chose to primarily play the drums, as he was most moved by the power and grace of musicians like Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Tony Williams. Ahmed’s instinctive understanding of how to swing hard, and support and uplift a soloist with whom he is playing, has been enjoyed and appreciated by the jazz community he has been a part of in the NYC area, and beyond, for many years.
Musicians have said that Ahmed is so easy to play with, and listens in a way that many drummers do not. This is not a surprise, as Ahmed is rooted in melody, as he plays guitar and keyboard, and sings and writes both instrumentals and songs with lyrics. He has completed, and recorded many of his own albums, playing every instrument, consisting of only original material. Ahmed has written over 300 songs, and dozens of instrumental pieces.
Ahmed is not limited to composing, and recording his own material. He has worked for many artists over the past thirty years. His playing can be heard on the vinyl and CD releases of many NYC Artists, ranging from folk rock artists, to indie rock bands, to straight ahead jazz ensembles. He has produced the recordings of singer/songwriters as well, creating parts, and multi-tracking the needed instrumentation. He currently plays regularly with a jazz trio, collaborates in two groups playing atmospheric jazz infused music, and continues to compose and record. Ahmed believes that all music is related, and that good music is all the same, in that it employs dynamics, emotion, creativity, and musicianship.
Ahmed has shared stages, tours, and musical experiences with the likes of Barry Harris, Evelyn Blakey, and Jeff Buckley, at venues like the Tarrytown music Hall, the village gate, outdoor festivals, benefit concerts, jazz clubs, house concerts and much more.

Ahmed Looks forward to playing at the Jazz Forum in Tarrytown with this power house line up of musicians, as jazz remains his favorite style of live music that has been a part of his life since birth, and has been the foundation for, and informed every musical venture he has every undertaken.

Patrick Leavey

Patrick Leavy(Bass) is an incoming freshman at the University of Miami frost school of music. He has performed in various jazz and classical groups including the All State Orchestra, the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band, New York Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Manhattan School of Music Precollege top jazz ensemble. August 2016

9th Note Supper Club

Tia Brazda has established herself as a sparkling presence on the jazz scene in Canada and beyond, performing from Montreal to Paris to Amsterdam, and at such notable festivals as the Vancouver International Jazz, Toronto International Jazz and Bestival (UK). Her debut EP, Cabin Fever burst onto the scene in February 2012, hitting #1 on the iTunes Canada Jazz chart as well as receiving play on CBC Radio 1, Jazz FM 91.1 and college radio stations across Canada. Originally from Vancouver, but having honed her cutting-edge sound in the clubs of Toronto, Tia’s sassy songs and pin-up girl style have made a startling impression, paying homage to the golden era while still remaining daringly modern.

Now with her debut full-length album Bandshell, Tia comes out swinging with a more polished flair, updating her vintage vibe from flats to heels. The 10 tracks examine affairs of the heart from a rollercoaster's front car view, neatly packaged and bowed with Brazda's superb Billie Holiday-meets-Amy Winehouse-like vocals. The album also debuted at #1 on the iTunes Jazz Chart in Canada and was ranked #5 by Jazz FM 91 in Toronto on their list of Top 10 Canadian jazz albums of 2015. It also hit #24 on the CMJ national jazz radio chart in the U.S. after being added to over 30 stations nationwide.

Westcott Theater

The Fat Peace is a seven-piece funk/reggae/rock outfit hailing from the greater New York region. Guitar players and principal songwriters Alex “Dunks" Gideon and Zach Schepis laid the first musical seeds nearly a decade ago-riffing together in basements and writing songs in their hometown of Syracuse, NY. The music soon carried them to Purchase, NY, where a talented group of musicians assembled to form a variety of ensembles before settling into the very first carnation of the band. After cutting their debut album “What's the Rush" at SUNY Purchase, the Fat Peace hit the road putting together a long and successful northeast tour. Throughout the rest of the year the band underwent numerous lineup changes to accommodate their tumultuous touring schedule, with Zach even leaving the band for a short while. But the music never stops. Picking up the pieces, Dunks and Zach reunited this past summer to form a new ensemble of musicians; a culmination that gathers the best from years past and turns it up to ten. Rounding out the collective is “Party" David Rivera on bass guitar, Robbie “Romulus" Skorga on keys/wizardry, Robbie “Rumblestrips" Elder on drums and percussion, Stan “The Man" Tady on saxophone, and Jarred Fehrenbach on trumpet. Keep both ears tuned for a new album of songs from the Fat Peace in the spring of 2015.
